Master Mindset – Rules for Improving Mindset

February 21, 2024

Welcome back to our limited blog series, where we embark on a journey towards achieving your performance and wellness potential in every domain of your life. This week we are exploring the sixth category of the PERFoRM Score™ – Mindset.

What does Mindset look like?

Top achievers stay motivated and confident in themselves and their abilities even when they’re facing challenges, feeling stressed, or when others don’t believe in them.

In the PERFoRM Score Assessment, your score measures the perspectives that guide your thinking including your motivation (how determined you are), how you see yourself, and the attitudes and beliefs that shape the way you pursue your goals.

Rules to Mastering Your Mindset

1. UNDERSTAND YOUR MOTIVATIONS

Explore what motivates you and what doesn't. Understanding your "why" can provide a strong sense of direction and motivation in pursuing your goals. Pay particular attention to your interests, desires, and the activities that energize you and whether you are being driven by internal or external motivators. Internal motivation (personal satisfaction and fulfillment) is far more sustainable and powerful a driver than external motivation (external rewards or pressures).

2. ALIGN YOUR PURPOSE

Align your personal and professional goals with your core values and beliefs. A clear sense of purpose can provide a strong and enduring source of motivation, allowing you to stay focused and driven even in challenging times.

3. ADOPT A GROWTH MINDSET

Try to foster a growth mindset in all situations as it shapes the way we learn and perform.  A growth mindset sees skill as something that can be developed and frames challenges as opportunities for learning and personal growth.  A growth mindset will help you believe in your capacity to improve and adapt in any situation and that your effort and perseverance will lead to improvement over time.

4. PRACTICE POSITIVE SELF-TALK & FOSTER UNWAVERING SELF-BELIEF

Understand that the way you think impacts the way you act.  Humans are hardwired to identify problems or threats.  As a result, we tend to focus on negatives, and too much negative thinking hurts motivation.  So be intentional about being positive.  Replace self-doubt with empowering thoughts and beliefs. Practice reframing negative thoughts as positives or using affirmations to build confidence and a positive outlook.

5. USE MOTIVATION KICKSTARTERS

Learn to kickstart your motivation in different situations. Recent research in neuroscience informs us that when your motivation is low toward an important goal, you should visualize the potential consequences of failure to ignite a sense of urgency and get into action. Conversely, when motivation is high, visualize the rewards and success of achieving your goals to build on your momentum.

6. FIND POSITIVE ROLE MODELS

Identify role models and individuals who inspire you. Observing the accomplishments of others can fuel your motivation and provide a roadmap for success. Learn from their journeys, successes, and setbacks to help enhance your own motivation and drive.

7. GET A KICK-ASS ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER

Even our best intentions can get derailed at times.  Partner with someone who will hold you accountable to your goals and push you to stay on track when you falter.  An accountability partner can provide motivation, support, and a gentle (or not so gentle) push when you need it.

8. PRACTICE GRATITUDE

Cultivate a habit of gratitude by regularly acknowledging and appreciating your achievements, strengths, and other positive aspects of your life.  Make it a practice to find three things from each day that you are grateful for and connect with the feelings associated with each item.  A gratitude practice reinforces a positive mindset, helps overcome negative and limiting thinking, and will boost your motivation and well-being.

9. TAKE BITE SIZE CHUNKS

Divide your larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks. Achieving these smaller milestones provides a sense of accomplishment and can maintain your motivation throughout the journey without leading to overwhelm.

10. CELEBRATE PROGRESS

Pursuing goals is an energy draining activity requiring a great deal of dedication and focus. Taking the time to celebrate your big achievements can provide fuel for your motivational fire and drive future efforts.  Just as important is to periodically celebrate some of your smaller efforts and gains you have made, particularly when you are in the middle of pursuing a long-range goal.
